Conflict and Beauty of Human Relationships - What is Confrontation? - Part 1 Lance Bane

“If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. - Matthew 18:15

leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift. - Matthew 5:24

We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. - 2 Corinthians 5:20

Relationships are very important to God. Second great commandment is, “love your neighbor as you love yourself.” We learn confrontation from our environment growing up.

What is confrontation?

  1. A respectful conversation between two powerful people…

  2. …that addresses a specific issue that is hurting connection…

    • Prepare for “I” statements.

    • Avoid “you” statements.

    • Address a specific issue, not one’s history.

  3. …for the purpose of achieving mutual understanding of the issue and building a plan to adjust, understand and meet the needs of the relationship…

    • Two items of information need to be talked about and understood -

      • What is the problem?

      • What do I need?

    • Construction of an “I” statement:

      • I feel ____________________ (emotion)

      • when ____________________ (behavior) happens.

      • I need ___________________ (emotion) in this relationship.

  4. …resulting in a stronger relationship.

    • You can have joy, trust, honesty and synergy in a relationship.

    • Relationships aren’t just worth it for us to master conflict, but it’s critical.
