Concluding the fourth stage of progressive leadership, Lance identifies a few more ideas that will help a leader be successful at the People Stage, which is all about reproduction.

Notes:

  • Creating, producing, being present in beauty, serving others and launching movements is one way to describe our everyday walk in life. As leaders, we produce and more importantly, we learn to reproduce so that more lives might have the opportunity to be enriched.

Seven ideas for growing as a leader in this stage:

  1. Recognize and steward people.

  2. Delegate, Delegate, Delegate.

  3. Be worthy of being followed by others.

  4. Pour your leadership effort into the top 20% of your people.

  5. Help your leaders grow. Coach. Coach. Coach.

  6. Attract talented people who have similar values to Gateway.

  7. Surround yourself with an inner core that complements your leadership.

4. People Stage - (Reproduction)

  1. Pour your leadership effort into the top 20% of your people and help your leaders grow. Coach. Coach. Coach.

    People are your most valuable asset. Developing people is a priority.

    • Pour

      • Give away though time, listening, sharing knowledge.

      • Training.

      • Giving opportunity.

      • Generous.

      • Carefully. How much can they handle?

    • Your leadership

      • Your experience.

      • Your network.

      • Your love and belief in them.

    • Top 20%

      • Identify humility, hustle, heart.

      • Organizational.

      • Measuring potential.

  2. Attract talented people who have similar values and surround yourself with an inner core that complements your leadership.

    Some of these thoughts are from a podcast called, “You may have presence, but is it executive presence?”

    • Attract

      • Be attractive

        • How you act (gravitas)

        • Have dignity.

        • Have a humble confidence.

        • Don’t be rattled by disagreement because you have grace under fire.

        • Be emotionally intelligent.

      • How you speak (communication)

        • Be concise and be compelling.

        • Use a simple vocabulary.

        • Be knowledgeable and curious.

        • Read the room.

        • Be assertive.

        • Utilize humor and stories.

        • Make eye contact.

      • How you look (appearance)

        This is the least important of the three, but it’s the first noticed.

        • Be well groomed.

          • Hair

          • Facial presentation

          • Shoes clean / polished.

          • Clothes not wrinkled / ironed.

            • Make sure your clothes fit well.

        • Ensure that your style is appropriate for where you are.

        • Have good posture and be energetic.

      • Talent

        • What are the skills people have?

        • What are their gifts?

        • What are their passions?

        • Where do they fit?

        • How do you help others see the talent?

          • No one is rejected, but maybe redirected.

          • Experiment on a trial basis.

          • Celebrate people.

          • Make adjustments.

        • Similar values

          • Looking for heart, hustle and humility.

Action Steps for Progressing in Leadership Stages:

  1. What stage of leadership am I currently in with most people?

  2. What stage of leadership am I currently in with other influencers on my team or within my company? List them.

  3. What will I commit to be, learn and do so I can grow through the stages with those that I lead?
